Deborah Sim's Achievements
Champion for Vibrant Communities
Over 24 years in office, Commissioner Sims has generated more than $50 millions in Community Development Grants (CDBGs) to lift Cook County families out of poverty, build high-quality affordable housing and create good-paying jobs. As a board member for NeighborSpace, the only nonprofit, urban land trust in Chicago that preserves and sustains gardens on behalf of dedicated community groups, Sims supports community gardens, promotes property ownership and educates community leaders on resource stewardship for sustainable, livable communities.
Advocate for Wholeness of Health
As Commissioner, Debroah Sims led the development of a critically needed mental health triage center in the Roseland community. Her leadership on delivering social safety net services began with her tenure at the Chicago Department of Human Services, where she committed herself to our community’s wholeness of health, including physical, mental and emotional health. As a rape victims’ advocate, Sims knows the emotional damage traumatic events can have on men and women who survive abuse and addiction. That is why she continues to defend the Affordable Care Act, which has provided health insurance for hundreds of thousands of Cook County residents and to secure expert physicians and build state-of-the-art hospital facilities to ensure high-quality care for the 300,000 patients who visit Cook County health facilities every year.
Fighter Against Tax increases. Champion for Fiscal Fairness
Elected in 1994, Commissioner Sims has successfully fought tax increases since 1996, while advocating for credits and exemptions for low-income families and senior citizens. No one has fought harder than Deborah Sims to protect working families against heavy tax burdens that rob them of their financial growth and freedom. Moreover, as President Pro Tempore, not only has Commissioner Sims led the fight against property tax increases, she’s also stood strong for fair property assessments for working families. For the past 24 years, today and for the future, Commissioner Deborah Sims is our champion for fiscal fairness.
“I'm running for re-election with a bold vision for economic fairness and opportunity working families can count on”
